Each Friday on the Jeep® Blog, we explore the Jeep brand’s iconic heritage by highlighting a different historical vehicle. This week’s vehicle is the 1962 Jeep Gladiator.

We’re officially into a new decade – the 1960s – in our weekly Heritage Fridays blog series. To celebrate that, this week’s vehicle focus is on the Jeep Gladiator, the completely new “J” line of trucks that were introduced for the 1963 model year.

The Jeep Gladiator was nothing if not versatile, thanks to its range of available configurations. The full-size pickup truck shared the same platform, front end, and powertrain as the vaunted Jeep Wagoneer. The 120-inch J-200 or the 126-inch J-300 versions came with either RWD or 4WD and a solid front axle or independent front suspension with optional dual rear wheels.

The Gladiator had several available configurations: Thriftside (narrow box), Townside (wide box), Chassis or Cab, Wrecker, and Chassis-mounted campers with extended wheelbases.

Check back on the Jeep Blog as we explore the Jeep Brand’s 1960s legacy as part of our deep look at Jeep Heritage.

  1. this is amazing work and historical background you brought on Jeeps. I see old pictures at home with such a car but I never thought it was a Jeep. 1962 Jeep Gladiator wow awesome looking vehicle. my grandpa used to tell me a story of how he got an accident and was forced to change the Jeep Door on the passenger seat. Lucky that my grandma was not in the car that day!
